John Roberts…Shame on You.
One has to wonder whether it was sex, drugs, or rock and roll that caused Roberts to write what might arguably be called the worst Supreme Court Decision in history. Sure, we may have plenty of rulings from which to choose, but defining the same word and concept in two different ways has to set some kind of precedent. One can only assume that the Chief Justice, and oh how I am ashamed to be forced to use that title, was motivated by something of which we are unaware, and I am not even slightly implying that we should be looking for something noble or principled. The ludicrous notion that conservatives, or other lovers of the Constitution, should be celebrating the purported upside of this ruling reminds me of the Sarah Palin suggestion that putting lipstick on a pig doesn’t change the fact that the subject is a pig. This ruling effectively places Roberts on par with Krugman who shills for progressives at the cost of his own reputation and uses easily refuted arguments to which even a reasonably intelligent elementary school pupil would be embarrassed to sign his name.
Of course the usual lack of integrity on the part of progressives is on full display as they celebrate a “win” with the usual lack of concern on whether the ruling truly meets constitutional muster. This is to be expected, and thus comes as no surprise, but it makes it all the more disappointing that some “conservatives” seem to now be in the process of accepting the liberal notion that the Constitution is what the Supreme Court says it is, rather than what is in the document itself. This ruling is no victory for the Constitutional Republic of the United States, no matter how one may wish to interpret it. It is a victory for the statist over the freedom lover, regardless of party or political persuasion.
To suggest that reining in the abuse of the Commerce Clause should be seen as a victory, when the door has been thrown wide open to the almost certain greater abuse to come through the extraordinary increase in the Federal Government’s power to tax simply boggles my mind. Make no mistake, this is a landmark ruling which will have far-reaching effects on individual liberties and the power of the Federal Government and can only be interpreted as a ruling designed with both of those goals in mind. Liberals, progressives, and even “conservatives” can say what they wish, but this is a devastating loss for the “ninety-nine percent”.
No matter the outcome of the November election, or the final configuration of “Obamacare”, this ruling is a complete negation of the rule of law as well as the Constitution and thus should be considered as a virtual declaration of war by those who wish to subject the American people to the will of the powerful elite. It is becoming increasingly difficult to understand what it will take for the American People to stand up and cry, “Enough”.
Our elected officials ignore the will of the people, and continue to be reelected. Our bankers and brokers steal millions of dollars from the public treasury and no longer even attempt to hide it. Our Federal Reserve rebukes our “representatives” while publicly claiming the right to make policy with little, if any oversight. Our Attorney General refuses to justify his actions and when held in contempt simply laughs at the gesture. Our borders are open, as are our voting booths. And, our Presidents claim to be above the law. Now we have a Supreme Court who blatantly rules in a manner inconsistent with the Constitution and yet some people celebrate. I guess it is true…we do get the government and country we deserve.
I’m not just embarrassed for John Roberts, I’m ashamed of the American People.
